The Bug Chronicles

Raise your hand if you hate bugs! No seriously, let go of the mouse and raise it up. I hate bugs so much I am typing this while raising both hands :)

We know we live in a fairly wet and humid climate. Bugs usually aren't that big of an issue, but it seems like every Spring the bugs seem to just come out of the woodwork, literally. We spray stuff every year, all summer long, but it doesn't seem to provide long term protection. Our main insect enemy is the earwig.
No, not that kind of ear wig...

this disgusting kind....
Even the name makes you want to start itching and checking yourself, doesn't it?

Bee hates these little critters and won't go near them (but she will grab some spiders with her bare hands!), but they seem to be attracted to her. She can spot them from a mile away and they have been found in her towel and even crawling up her leg beneath her pants. This is what ended up on the kitchen floor within .34 seconds of Bee discovering 2 earwigs crawling up her leg.

So, J is left to do the dirty work. He usually gets some tissue so he can grab them and chuck them in the toilet. He will then spit on them and flush 'em out of our lives. J is a brave soul for protecting his sweet queen from the mighty dragons, but he is no less disgusted by the fowl creatures. He has been known to freak out and drop the wicked insects from time to time, which is not good and can be damaging to his role as protector.

J has often talked about the perfect invention that would solve all of our insect problems: it would be a small vacuum attached to a 2 foot tube so you could just suck up the bug and then dispose of it. Sounds genius doesn't it?

Ever read SkyMall - that crazy magazine with interesting inventions they stuff in the seat pockets on airplanes? Well, J was flipping through one and made an amazing discovery.....
It's called the bug vacuum, but J likes to think of it as his sword, which he bravely uses to defend his castle and protect his queen from such unsightly creatures as would dare to show themsleves in the light.

This post is hilarious-partly because I am such an avid bug hater myself. I've really got to get a bug vacuum b/c the scream and run approach doesn't do a whole lot of good-dang it! How could something so small be so disturbingly creepy and wrong on every level? ps-i liked your ear wig pic-LOL. only you guys would post that.

i hate earwigs too!! they were in Arizona and now they're in Seattle too. I've spotted a couple of them already. I would pay a pretty penny to see how fast Brookie probably stripped off those pants:) haha.

p.s. I can't believe your sister graduated Bee!? what, I remember her being basically a toddler:)

My how old we're all getting.

I love checking your guys' blog out! You have great writing and I love all your pics and seeing all the fun stuff you get to do while in the East. It's weird seeing pictures of VA b/c it still feels like home to us. I do have to say I DON'T miss all the ear wigs and especially the evil jumping crickets...eeeeeewwww!!!!! Thank goodness for the awful dry climate we get to have. Cracking lips and dry skin I can manage - ear wigs up my pants, not so much!!!

This is your cousin Sheena. I just found your blog from Elisabeth's and wouldn't you know it, the first post of yours I read is about BUGS! I just moved to Houston, TX and OH HOW I HATE THE BUGS!!!!! Giant cockroaches, sliver fish, spiders, ants, etc. I never wanted to live here for that reason and here I am, and there are so many and they are so big. We had tons of earwigs in our basement apt in S. Provo. I even had one hiding in my purse and while I was standing in line somewhere it crawled out and onto me. Gross! I am sorry about the nasty earwigs. I HATE them oh so much too. But cute blog. You guys are so cute!

I couldn't agree more. We had an infestation of ants and flying ants of the like in our apt. for about 3 months, and got worse every day. We sprayed and entire bottle and nothing, they had their professional spray 3 times and nothing, Dad used home defense and NOTHING. Finally we got them to remove the water heater and found a big hole. Well they patched and... nothing. They were still EVERYWHERE!! :( so we had them come back and patch every nook and cranny and.... NOTHING :) This time it was good nothing. We have had no more ants since!! Good luck with your ears...
