Maymont is a great local park that used to belong to some wealthy Virginians. When they passed away, they gave all of their property to the city so everyone could enjoy it. The park has several animals (almost like a zoo), wide open spaces, classic horse buggies, and more! And it's all free!
The original house/mansion is still in tact and they offer tours to see the inside.
There is also a Japanese garden section
